Phase 3+4: evolution, the series, and reflection

Image
Evolution: Within the world of diverse casting, we see a huge improvement from earlier films. In Ant-Man wasp, we do get to see a non-light-skinned black man as a brilliant scientist who worked along with Hank Pym who created the Ant-Man suit. In Spider-Man Homecoming Spider-Man's best friend Ned is a Filipino-American boy,  and both of the love interests are mixed women of color.  In Endgame, there was a scene during the last big fight where are all of the female characters, in the end, see you joined together to take the glove with the Infinity Stones.  it was an obvious Ode to feminism end came off very stiff,  however with Marvel’s history of a complete lack of feminism or respect a woman's this move was very much appreciated although it could have been executed in a much smoother manner. The scene in Wakanda where Black Widow is fighting with Okoye against an alien comes off as more genuine use of “girl power” and female Aid. Source: https://disney.f...

Week 3: Phase 3

Marvel's White Washing Problem, Queer Bating, and Long Due Diversity “In Marvel’s main comic universe (Earth-616) series of events, Magneto (Max/Magnus) saves Magda from concentration camps in 1936, where she was targeted for her Roma ancestry. Like any convoluted love story, the rest is history, because Magda and Magneto later had the twins. Throughout mutant and non-mutant history—seeing as the twins aren’t necessarily mutants—Marvel Comics has changed and retrofitted Wanda and Pietro’s family.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.themarysue.com/mcu-whitewashing-problem-roma/amp/ Source: https://twitter.com/mcu_direct/status/1224452753386278912 The Maximoff twins are Romani people and the fact that their heritage is ignored is even more problematic because the Romani people were one of the groups persecuted by the nazis and the main antagonist group Hydra is a fantasy nazi science group. The Macimoff twins were also experimented on by Hydra which was a fate that the Nazis cast upon ...

Phase 1 & 2: Week 2

A powerful moment from this week was during a conversation with Justin Edwards   while watching the Iron Man 3 movie. We were discussing the plot of the film and how certain aspects of the plot reflect realities, situations, or ideas in our world. The antagonist of this film is a white man who weaponizes technology that he stole from a female botanist, and uses it to back his domestic terrorist attacks. These terrorist attacks are portrayed to the public as being done by “The Mandarin.” This man pays an actor to be the face of his attacks, and profits off of xenophobia to spread fear and control the situation.  Source: https://www.businessinsider.com/iron-man-3-villain-mandarin-2012-10 The actor who is the face of The Mandarin is above Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelstudios/comments/jqmuja/one_thing_i_would_to_see_in_the_future_of_the_mcu/ Although I wouldn't consider this to have a large emotional impact, during The Avengers film watching the character Mar...

Phase 1: Week 1

Image
Hi, this is Caroline Hyde and I am working with Justin Edwards on an investigation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a focus on cultural impact and representation. We chose this project because we were both recently in an English class that focused on the cinematic commentary of African American film throughout American history. As there are four phases of cinema (both movies and tv shows), we are watching one phase a week. The three goals are to 1) Observe how the world at the time (cultural movements) affect the films, 2) Observe how the films affect the world around them, 3) Observe the total change in representation throughout the arc of creation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Within this first portion of films, Justin and I initially watched them in order of creation- Iron Man 1 and 2. However, after watching these films, we decided to go ahead within the different phases and watch the films that occur before the early 2000s where Iron Man is set. Captain America t...
