Phase 3+4: evolution, the series, and reflection

 Evolution:

Within the world of diverse casting, we see a huge improvement from earlier films. In Ant-Man wasp, we do get to see a non-light-skinned black man as a brilliant scientist who worked along with Hank Pym who created the Ant-Man suit. In Spider-Man Homecoming Spider-Man's best friend Ned is a Filipino-American boy,  and both of the love interests are mixed women of color.

In Endgame, there was a scene during the last big fight where are all of the female characters, in the end, see you joined together to take the glove with the Infinity Stones.  it was an obvious Ode to feminism end came off very stiff,  however with Marvel’s history of a complete lack of feminism or respect a woman's this move was very much appreciated although it could have been executed in a much smoother manner. The scene in Wakanda where Black Widow is fighting with Okoye against an alien comes off as more genuine use of “girl power” and female Aid.

WandaVision

In Wandavision Monica Rambeau was the first black female character outside of black panther to operate outside of sub-characters and best friends.  she is the grown-up version of the little girl that we saw in Captain Marvel as Captain Marvel's best friend's daughter.  We see dedication and perseverance throughout the TV series from this character to save Wanda because of this connection and empathy towards Wanda.  Jimmy Woo an FBI operative that we met during Ant-Man/wasp, one of the first named East Asian characters, makes a large appearance and went over amazingly with the fans.  people love this character so much that he might even get his own spin-off show.  Wandavision was the first Marvel film Endeavor with showed microaggressions and the response from the people that they were towards.

Falcon/Captain America & Winter Soldier

While watching Captain / Falcon and the Winter Soldier you can tell just how much the social climate during the time of creation affected the series.  one of the largest subplots is the falcon wrestling with the idea of a black man being Captain America,  this is within recognizing the history of The Shield,  the history of America,  and looking towards the future with offering kids a reflection of themselves and the symbolism of America.  another large portion of the series is an investigation into the fragile white male ego, and however strong or powerful within standing or physical ability a lot of the times white males are not raised with the ability to place their identity and ego within themselves but what they do for others.  this manifests in one of the most dramatic moments of the show when the quote-unquote new Captain America drives to shield into the partner of someone who killed his best friend in a fit of rage and insecurity.  we can see his insecurities throughout the show with both how he discusses his new ranking with people who he's close to and how he lashes out in public,  if he knew his true worth and saw his power for what it was and was confident in it he would not have to yell at people that he was Captain America.

Isaiah Bradley is a pivotal part of this series as well.  this is a black man who fought in World War II and was one of the testers for the super serum which created Captain Rogers / the original Captain America.  is Legion was John Behind Enemy Lines and he knew that he could save them but people told him not to go and he had orders to stay.  he defied his orders and saved everyone but because he defied orders he was locked up and experimented on as he was the only survivor of the super serum trials.

All in all, I really enjoy this project and felt like I learned a lot from it.  I am going to take these skills with analyzing media into my everyday life and I have noticed that I have started to apply the types of scanners that I use on these films in other mass media that I intake. This project has also increased my awareness on just how much what we consume impact our thought process.  this awareness has made it so that social and cultural revolutions have even more of an impact and importance. I feel as though this non-traditional passion project, and others like it, should be able to occur during other years. If Catlin truly strives for an experimental and immersive education then we need to let go of personal biases and traditional manners thought when we were offered an opportunity like the senior project which allows us to explore our creativity and passion. Working as a cohort was useful and imperative for this project as Justin my partner would bring up points that I hadn't even seen or begin to think of a lot of this project was discussion evolution of ideas and then synthesization of ideas and research.
